making a partion for linux on my dell laptop?

I've got xp installed and just a c: drive, 60gb. Should I split that in half or thirds for linux? If so, what type of partition does it need (linux that is) and how do I decide or when do I decide which partion I get to choose or its destination? If I create a d or e drive, will linux install itself there since it's the only drive without windows on it?

Thanks, M

so many basic questions......;-)

-resize your xp-partition to the size you need
-install your preferred distro (formatting will be done during setup) in the unpartitioned place
-you donīt need to make any "drives" for your linux installation, under XP you DONīT SEE the new partition
-install bootmanager to choose between XP and LINUX during Boot

Figure how much you need for XP, then leave the rest unformatted/unallocated.
Carve it up at (Linux) install time. Don't use it all either - you'll always find something you need an extra partition or two for. I've managed to squeeze XP and Slack and Gentoo all onto 40 Gig on my Inspiron 1100 at work.
