Make opera available to all users: How?
 

Hi

I just downloaded Opera into root. Its on the Desktop and runs fine.

I get a list of infomation including the following when I type at the browser, "locate opera":

How do I make Opera available to all users. I'd like to exit root into my own user I.D. and continute working fromt there. More specifically, what command do I type at the prompt?

OS: Fedora Core 3

You are looking at your Microstuffed Windoze file system mounted onto your linx file system.
You need to install Opera onto you linux system and it will automatically be availabe to you Linux users.

I thought downloading/installing would have done that. Any idea how I ensure that its installed onto linux?

you could try
#yum opera
if it doesn't work then search for an rpm package and install onto FC. Failing this then find a source package and do compile and install from it.

which opera

should tell you if it's in a directory in the standard path

if so then just typing

opera

should start it for any user

I tried it and got nowhere yet:

[root@localhost ~]# which opera

[root@localhost ~]# opera
bash: opera: command not found

Yet it is on my Desktop according to this following information:

[root@localhost ~]# cd Desktop
[root@localhost Desktop]# ls
blah-00886828e6.desktop opera_8.01-20050615.5-shared-qt_en_sarge_i386.deb
LinksEmailsSent.sxc ymessenger.kdelnk
mozilla-firefox.desktop

Then I type in this next command and the response seems to be indicating its not on the Desktop:

[root@localhost Desktop]# which opera
/usr/bin/which: no opera in (/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/root/bin)

Any clues to get it working?

From a terminal type "opera" and see if it works. If so just use "opera" in a desktop link to execute it.
If you need to find the executable then use this command
$ find /usr -name opera -type f

Thought by now I'be be running opera. Nothing yet. How is it possible that its is on my Desktop but not responsive to commands?

As you can see I've tried to run/activate it but still nothing. Still reading but if you have any useful suggestions please continute to post them here. Thanks

I noticed this line
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4257754 Jul 20 12:07 opera_8.01-20050615.5-shared-qt_en_sarge_i386.deb
which shows a deb package. FC3 uses rpm packages. Have you got an rpm package or tried using yum to install it. What was the result of
$ find /usr -name opera -type f

Thank you for noticing the "deb" package. I did a new download this time selection fedora core as the distribution. My computer now indicates that it now is installed. Its not appearing on my desktop which tell me perhaps that's something I need to manually set up. Also, Firefox is still my default browser. I did and 'whereis opera' command and got the following:

[root@localhost man]# whereis opera
opera: /usr/bin/opera /usr/lib/opera /usr/X11R6/bin/opera /usr/bin/X11/opera /usr/share/opera /usr/share/man/man1/opera.1
[root@localhost man]#

That information tells me, of course, where it is. So now I know its installed and the path. Hope this is not too much to ask, but how to I activate this browser so that I can use it?

root root root, it's all root as far as I can see.

go to opera.com get the version as for fedora (try both, core 3 version and the other core one as well).

Into your /home directory.

They should (in theory) be rpms so you can just click on them, at worst, you'd get a prompt for your root password and they should then install.

Logically, you should then have them installed as user, not root. So you should be able to start it from either a terminal or link to application or whatever.

You'd then find that if you did want to surf when logged in as root, you can just do the "opera" command in a terminal but when it starts, you'd notice that you'd have to re-do any customisations that you happen to like.

Well, well, well. That light at the end of the tunnel turned out to be a big chunk of diamond. LOL.

Opera is now launched and operational.

I found it while on another computer configuration related journey. Here's how: I clicked on
Applications, then
System Settings, then
Internet, then, what do you know, Opera appeared as my only internet option.

Looking back at my first question where opera seemed to have been mounted on a Windows partition: My computer is dual boot. So the locate command was probably showing opera in the Windows environment where I was also using it. This may have or not have confused the question. I'm sorry if it did. In the end though we found Opera.
