Question make config

I am reading "Running Linux" by o'Reilly. I am trying to build my kernal more efficiently. When I type in the command "make config" like the book says to, I get an error that reads:
make: ***no rule to make target "config". Stop.

What does this mean?? What am I doing wrong??

By the way, I am running RedHat 9

I get the same response with both of those

make menuconfig:
make: ***no rule to make target "menuconfig". Stop.

make xconfig:
make: ***no rule to make target "xconfig". Stop.

Are you executing this from your sources directory? What the error is telling you is that it isn't finding a makefile.

You chimed in while I was writing. One thing to keep in mind when using Running Linux is to read the whole procedure (several times in most cases) before you touch the keyboard.
