mail server and mandrake 9 on Pentium 300?

Hi all,

I'm reading all HOWTOs and books and web pages about security in Linux, mostly mail security.
Why I'm doing that ?Because I need to take control of my in and out coming emails.I have 2 computers, one with XPs on it and 2nd is very old Pentium 300,64mb Ram,4gb Hdd on which I'd like have mail server together with Linux Mandrake 9.

finaly question is : is it possible ?

i can use new HDD 80gb also.I was just wondering if it is possible to have it in one old box with pentium 300 and 64 RAM

Thanks for any helpful reply,

Sure, that shouldn't be a problem actually. Take down most of the services, keep it a mail only server, no X and crap, and you should be fine. That's plenty of power IMO for a small mail server. I'd keep most services off that aren't necessary, for example, you shouldn't need any X services, any apache services, any keyboard services (as you should be ssh'ing to this server to adjust settings and whatever) and the works. If it's not security or mail related, cut it.

Yeah, Mandrake should go fine on that though, do the install, detach the components, run the bad boy via an SSH connection, or setup webmin to run via an http exterior interface (which will likely mean you'll have to read up a bit ;) ).

Cool

Ok,
I'm glad someone from all the readers answered.Thanx

It is nice that i can run it on this old computer, but i have to read a lot.i've read about Apache which i installed when Linux asked for it.it was first time and I'm user just few weaks. So difficult.

And i thought that Apache is good one.i've read bit about SSH.I'm sure not enough.

i'll go read more to find out.But how about hard drive?I'm sure i need to mount more space.

Which server you'll recomend for me as newbie, who is using KDE graphic desktop?

Thanks a lot,

4GB is plenty for a mail server, but again, no gui. If you are going to be running a gui, especially KDE, you'll need more power than that IMHO. I think it'll work, but it'll crawl.

80GB is wayyy overkill for a single user mail server unless you are getting massive emails from people, which, even then, you shouldn't have then on the mail server for very long (unless you are planning on going IMAP, which I do suggest..).

Which mail server do I recommend? Most oftenly www.postfix.org However, Exim should not be ruled out.

Cool
