mail rundown

HI
can someone please explain the whole email procces guided by the follwing questions.

1, would the e-mail application in linux follow the same operation concept as outlook in windows?

in windows I dowload an upload to an SMTP and POP3 server, my question is
2, what is an email server, is outlook a server, would I need a mail server in linux. if I dont what would I need on my linux system. is outlook the cilent application?

3, I know linux is powerfull and I can probaly set up my own POP3/SMTP server and distribute mail to other people, what porgrams in linux is used for that,
what program do you think I should use to send and recive mail which conceptually opperates in the same way as outlook in windows.

feel free to explan beond the guidlines of these questions ( as long as its clear) or point me to articles/books that would help me understand the concepts

thanks

1) Yes, nearly all e-mail clients conform to smtp, pop3 and imap standards.
2) Outlook is just a client which connects to a server which you may or may not run.
3) I use qmail and courier-imap.

If you just want e-mail and addressbooks then I would use thunderbird. If you want a full PIM then try evolution.

3. I use Postfix with a mixture of POP and IMAP.

In regards to your client email in which one you think you should use, use the one you feel most comfortable with, its really your choice. Hell, try them all out to choose which one you like most. ;)

thanks
its clear to me now that I only need client software, and its good to know that I can run a PIM if i wanted to.
