machine hangs for some time after giving password.


Hi I m trying to take a console of linux machine using putty.
Whenever i connect to the machine and give password details to log into the machine it hangs for some time and then it allow the login.

I m totally clueless why it is happening suddenly .

I found it to be DNS issue from our network guys .But how would i detect it from the machine itself.

putty has a log, right click the heading and click event log, that can give you an idea of what's happening.

I did check the putty logs but it didn't suggest anything related DNS error.

the log seems ok. Do you have wireshark or any other similar s/w, which can capture packets ? Use it while logging in, capture packets and check traffic which could be the possible reason for delay. There is also a possibility that the Linux machine you are logging in is responding slow because of the h/w specification( it happened with me, i changed the system with latest h/w like RAM & processor, and the login was hasted).

Why don't you add an entry in the /etc/hosts file? That will make the login fast I guess.

I did that but it has not made any diff.
