machine cannot shut down after being loaded with mandrakelinux10.1
 
i have installed mandrakelinux10.1 in my machine.
when i shuts down the system, the shutting down messages of the applications gets displayed, one after the other as is shown in the verbose mode. The messages stops coming after
halting...
power down
After that nothing happens. The machine does not stops running.
Please help.

You must have the acpi (or apm for older distros) module loaded in order for your box to shut down.

add into /etc/rc.local
modprobe apm
or look into /etc/modules.conf or modules.preload

on my mandy it is apm which is needed, despite the fact that the bios is not apm compliant AFAIK
