macbook not playing nice with dhcp

Ladies & Gents

I recently moved my wife to a macbook after her win-xp crash. All the other machines on my network are being updated by dhcpd to ddns and nslookup works on them. But the new (to us) macbook is not.

The connection is via wifi.

All other machines, weather wifi or wired. work. (3 debian, 3 android, and 1 winxp.)

I have set the network name as instructed by a guy I know that uses mac's all the time with no joy and he is out of ideas.

I do know that the macbook is passing the correct name to dhcpd by snooping the packets with wireshhark. (I don't really understand what the packets are telling me, only that I can see the correct name in one of them.)

The macbook has to do the "Request, Acknowledge" thing a couple of times in a row before it will accept the ip.

I find no errors in the logs.

Thanks.

as much as i love my Macs, i love Apple's CS even better. It would be worth calling Apple directly to have them help you resolve the issue. As long as the laptop is less then 3yrs old you can buy the extended warranty for it. If not, then set an appointment with an Apple Pro at your local Apple store, or a local authorized repair shop.

There could be some bad hardware involved with the laptop. The only times ive ever had any issues with any of my Macs for WiFi of any kind was when we had bad hardware in the Mac.

P.S. does the wired connection function properly for you? if so then my money is on bad hardware.

Thanks lleb,

But seen's how it is a used machine, 2010 vintage, I don't think I will get much help form apple. We purchased it from the local Mac store and they report it as all the hardware functioning correctly per their diagnostic software.

The local name resolution is not that big a deal. It's just that I have a scrip that I use to backup some important files with and it will not work without ddns. Not that I can't do it by hand but......

well as its 3yrs old you might still get some support from Apple.

Also id consider taking it back to the supplier and explaining the issue.

Have you looked into the built in backup (time machine) for Apple. It is a built in rsync to what ever destination you wish, be it local, external, LAN, or WAN locations.

you can always manually populate /etc/hosts with IP/name:

Code:
imac:~ user$ cat /etc/hosts
##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1	localhost
255.255.255.255	broadcasthost
::1             localhost
fe80::1%lo0	localhost
192.168.20.125	server
192.168.20.150	win7

imac:~ user$
thats my hosts file on my iMac.
