When you open pcmanfm on the left side mine shows craig, Desktop and my drives. Click on Desktop open a second window in /usr/share/applications drag and drop whatever app you need. Or just right lick Create new txt file. Then open the app in /usr/share/applications with leafpad copy the info to the new txt file you created on your Desktop.

it will look something like this:

Firefox.desktop the name of the file
info in the file:
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Terminal=false
Name[en_US]=Firefox
Exec=/home/craig/Download/firefox/firefox %u
Icon=/home/craig/Download/firefox/icons/mozicon128.png
StartupNotify=true
Categories=Network;WebBrowser;
MimeType=text/html;text/xml;application/xhtml+xml;application/xml;application/vnd.mozilla.xul+xml;application/rss+xml;application/rdf+xml;image/gif;image/jpeg;image/png;
