LUKs and LVM Advice on Partitioning Method

Thanks for the great forum and I hope I can contribute in some way in future.

I have been hard working on a problem trying to implement solutions found written up online now for about a week with no success.

I have a laptop with 500GB HD, I want to split the disk and have half of it with Windows so I can use ITunes and Office and Visual Studio.

I have a copy of Ubuntu and really like using it. The issue I have is that the only way to install the LUKs and LVM option from the DVD is to allow it to format the entire disk rather than only part.

I started looking for solutions to that online and found a few approaches available.

1) Install to the entire drive then use the LiveDVD to resize which I have this tutorial for here

2) Adjust the Installer DVD to use a different option instead of 100% remaining space to lets say 50%.

With option 1 I get stuck at the FDISK part, the rest is OK and booting with a recovery disk like partition magic shows all steps are correct up until the FDISK section.

With option 2 I aren't sure what to change in the ISO - perhaps a seed file? or an .rd file?

Can anyone offer some advice? Ive spent ages on this now already I'm desperate for a solution.

You can use just one (or two or three...) partitions for LVM.
Each partition acts as a Physical Volume.
You can use them scattered over more than one real disk.

I suggest you use a multi-partition USB stick and possibly a spare HD partition to try it out.

If this is your first meeting with LVM, I would really think twice about that resizing of the LVM container.

Do you really need encryption?
