Question lucid lynx mouse highlighting drag

Hi, after an update, the mouse, when trying to highlighting something on say a web page, by holding down the left button and draging, sometimes works, normally, and other times, I have to click once, I get a word, click again, and the whole line.

Now I use Audiacity a lot, and this behaviour, is intolerable. I have looked in System ->Preferences ->Mouse and can not find anything usefull.

Any ideas as to how to get my mouse back to normal, please.

What you describe is what should happen with a double click.

Your Double-Click Timeout may be too long.

Also, have a look at the Accessibility tab under System ->Preferences ->Mouse and see if "Trigger secondary click by holding down the primary button" is ticked. You want this to be unticked.

Your screenshots look fine to me.

Have a look at your updates history (file > History in Synaptic) and see if there is a recent update that would have affected your mouse.

Some possibilities are:
mousetweaks
xserver-xorg-input-mouse
xserver-xorg-input-vmmouse

You could reinstall these if you have no other success.

Don't forget to try another mouse to see if it is a hardware problem.
