Lubuntu 14.04 Boot Loop

Hey all,

I've got an HP Pavilion dm4 Notebook that's been like a good friend to me in the past, but hasn't been running as well as it used to. I decided to move on to something new that I knew would work - some form of Linux. I chose Lubuntu, as I had heard so many good things about it and wouldn't need to run loads of processes.

I ran through the installer from a flash drive and installed Lubuntu 14.04 onto my machine, and was then prompted to reboot. Now I'm stuck on the Gnu Grub page, where *Ubuntu is listed instead of *Lubuntu. Whenever I hit Ubuntu to start, screen cuts to black, I see the HP logo and BIOS login note, and am dropped back in front of the Grub page. This is my first true experience with the Linux kernel (I've played with Raspbian).

Does anyone have any insight as to what's going wrong? I haven't yet been able to login and am unsure regarding where to go.

Thanks
-K

You will need someone with much more experience than me to help you with this, but just to get one "problem" out of the equation for you, it is normal that it would say ubuntu and not Lubuntu on the grub menu. I have Xubuntu and it does the same. They use the ubuntu grub without editing it like that.

Did you boot the USB into live mode before installing? Can you boot into the live mode now from USB? This is very likely a video driver issue and booting into live mode will allow you to post some info that will be necessary to ID the problem...

Booting from live seems to have done the trick! I've got an older flash drive that likely had a few issues, but everything started up and I can actually see my desktop now. Thanks!

Hi there,

Rather than ask the same question, I thought I would bump this thread.

I've tried two different flavours of linux on my machine now, Crunchbang and Lubuntu, both don't get past the boot screens without rebooting.

In Crunchbang world I got as far as GRUB Loading and nothing ever happened, with Lubuntu it just constantly reboots without the screen ever displaying.

I have checked disks and ram, no problems.

I can also get into either OS by simply using the live test features of the USB installer - there appears to be no obvious problem.

Any help would be HUGELY appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Sap
