ltsp, or mini linux?
 

Okay , i just got a old 486 , no cdrom.

I got a newer mdk 10 box, so i want to create a Xterminal on the old one and then run off the newer box. My prob is what path would be the easiest cause to take. the specs for the old machineis as follows:

486 33mhz
200 mb
8 mb ram.
(unknown Nic)
floppy drive
no cdrom.

So what would you guys recomend i do:

a) Do the Ltsp thing and forget about the hardrive.(remember i don't know my NIC). Another thing with this method is that I dialup and the newest version of Ltsp is version 4 which uses wget to install, this is out of the question for my super slow connection. So i have to download Ltsp3 at work and then install at home. So will Ltsp 3 work with my MDK 10 installation on my newer box?

b) I can perhaps install using a lightweight Linux like Basic Linux and then do a query to my MDK box, this seems simp[le enuff but keep in mind the box won't be only for me , but really for my kid/wife and they both wont be able to use command line to do this.

c)Or can i place the old hardrive into my new box as a slave and then copy acrossthe Damn Small Linux files and install from there? in the the new machine?

Also keep in mind i don't have all that much Linucx command line experience or know how? But really eager to get this thing working tho.

Umm, id have to say use a small linux distro, but i wouldnt expect much out of it on a 486. Definetly no gui (whether you were to use ltsp or not). You'll be using console a lot. I'd suggest you use it to teach yourself the console.

Try running zipslack (ftp.slackware.com). It needs a dos partition and dos installed. If your adventurous you could create a small 32mb linux swap partition, to do away with the swap file that is created using a disk util like partition magic.
