low screen resolution!

Around a month ago I was having an issue where the GUI would not start and I was getting an error "NO SCREENS FOUND" I also had an incompatible driver for my linux kernel.
To get it working from the terminal I did
sudo sh NVIDIA....run whatever the file name is. I restarted X and it worked great! Now a month down the line I reboot my system and the highest resolution setting I can have is 640x480.
I tried doing sudo sh NVIDIA... nothing.

Strange note: I go into xorg.xconf and I change DRIVER "NVIDIA" to "vesa"
I restart X and now I am able to go into 800x600, but not the resolution I am looking for.

The nvidia driver installation seems not to have worked. What linux distribution and version are you using? If you can answer that we can most probably provide you with instructions on how to correctly install the driver.

How can I give you that information?
Also I just upgraded my drivers to NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.35.run.

Yes, this is very pertinent info. Some of the "mainstream" distros will have the NVIDIA binary-only drivers in the software repositories, so that you can install them through the package manager. Ubuntu does this for sure, as does Linux Mint I believe (being that it's based on Ubuntu and is compatible with its repositories).

EDIT:

Just tell us what distribution of Linux you have installed on your machine, e.g. Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, Linux Mint, etc.

leinad11 06-29-2010 01:15 AM

Kunbuntu 10.04 (LTS?)

MrCode 06-29-2010 01:20 AM

Okay, then you shouldn't need to install the NVIDIA drivers with the .run executable. You can just open Synaptic and look for "nvidia" (or just do apt-cache search nvidia in a terminal), and install the package for it.

Have you already tried this?

leinad11 06-29-2010 01:24 AM

Ya, actually I've tried installing the package from Synaptic with the same results.

By the way, I got a GeForce 6150 LE

That is my xorg.conf. Notice I have "vesa". That is, like I said, to be in a resolution bigger than 640x480. Browsers are really hard to manage under those resolutions. Also I added "Modes 1280x1024" on my own as well which doesn't do anything. :/

evo2 06-29-2010 02:59 AM

If you specify "vesa" the nvidia driver will not be used. Please use the nvidia driver and post the the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file (will be renamed Xorg.0.log.old if you restart X with the vesa driver).

I hope that is it. I renamed DRIVER to "NVIDIA" and restarted X then quoted file /var/log/Xorg.0.log. My monitor is an HPw17e

leinad11 06-29-2010 08:19 PM

BAM solved my own problem! I can't believe it. After evo2 told me to check out my Xorg.0.log, I noticed there was an error. I googled it and found on an Ubuntu forum this guy that had the similar problem. I edited my Hsync and Vsync in xorg.conf to the manufacturers specifications (thank you internet) and BAM! got my sweet sweet resolution back. Thanks everyone for the help!
