Lost XP Dual Boot
Greeings all
Help! My old motherboard gave up the ghost after several years of reliable service. I installed a new K7VT4A Pro by ASRock. My normal dual boot is XP then Mandriva. Mandriva runs flawlessly (Ver 10.1) however when I choose XP on the boot screen, all I get is a black screen and a flashing curser. XP and Mandriva worked perfectly with the old motherboard, the new and old board are not the same. XP is mounted first on the drive, second is Mandriva. Both OS are on the same drive. From installation, Mandriva is defaulted to start first. Is there a solution to this problem, or do I have to reinstall XP, which is a royal pain in my book. I didn't believe there would be any problems when switching the mother boards. Thank You for any help Adriann |
It seems to be the case in general that if you replace major bits of your system like the motherboard, Linux gives you less negative surprises than Windows..
So I suppose this is an XP-specific problem, and has nothing to do with the linux installation. So you'll probably have to ask at a Windows XP specific Forum. Your situation really sucks.. you may have to end up reinstalling everything.. :scratch: |

I was hoping it had something to do with the dual boot screen itself, which I think is part of Mandriva.

So are you saying that the computer jams when you just select XP on boot loader, _before_ even pressing enter? If that's the case, then I guess the bootloader is somehow corrupt, and you need to reinstall it..
Can't remember if it's GRUB or LILO in Mandriva.. |
My guess is that the chipset differences are what you are having trouble with.
Some get around this with a repair install (not sure which option off hand) but I would research this before starting given your dual boot config. Doesnt help you, but setting your chipset to "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller" prior to hw change is how I think its to be done. I did find this little nugget: "Heres the short route. Running a repair instalation. This will erase all of your restore points and set you back to version 2002 which will then need to be upgraded to service pack 2..."less biggie" 1. Install new Mobo 2. Configure your bios to boot from CD 3. Boot to windows XP CD by tapping the spacebar during bootup. 4. Press enter at the first screen to setup windows XP now (not "R" to enter recovery conlsole) Highlight your detected windows XP instalation in the list and press "R" to repair 5. Enjoy a tasty beverage and watch setup TV This should land you right back on your desktop. which you can upgrade to service pack 2 by going to google and typing "service pack 2 network install" -link removed- " |

I dont think it would erase anything BUT I do no have a dual boot. I would more worry about your other partition - but even then its probably ok.
Do some research prior! Please dont just take what I say as the final word. |
