lost password

For some reason, i am being asked for a password to action recommended updates. This just started and I was never asked for a p/w before and I do not remember my root p/w. I have tried to restore my p/w using the suggested methods from recovery mode etc. I need help/

We can't really help without details. Things like what version/distro of Linux? What some of the "suggested methods" you've tried are, and what the results were? Anything?

For 95+% of Linux, you should be able to put in your installation CD/DVD/USB stick, boot from it, and enter RESCUE mode. Manually mount your hard drive, and edit the /etc/shadow file, removing the root password (that is, everything between the first and second colons ":"). Reboot, and root will have no password.

You should be able to change the password booting in single user mode.

Does YOUR password work when prompted during updates?
