Lost partition table-I think!-on USB flash drive

I was using gparted to remove two fat32 partitions and create a single ext4 partition. After deleting both partitions the drive showed as unallocated as expected. When selecting format as ext4 a message appeared stating a new partition table needs to be created and instructed how to do so. Upon applying the changes got a message stating a partition table has been created but the kernel doesn't know it. The device may be in use. Reboot the system then install device (something to that effect). Upon rebooting the USB drive was never seen again. Not in Gparted, a file manager or testdisk /list. I have a feeling the partition table is missing or invalid. Is there a chance of recovery or is the device "toast."

Stick the drive in and have a look at dmesg and see if it is recognised at all. Else it may be a udev issue.

Solved

About an hour after submitting the post I saw the USB stick in lsusb, before submitting the post it wasn't there, while inserted the whole time. Then brought up gparted and took care of it. Thanks for the reply.
