Lost my desktop

Greeting from a brand new Linux user. I seem to have ran into a problem with my Gnome desktop. I'm using RH 7.2. The problem started when my laptops keyboard stoped responding. I figured if I reboot all would be fine. Not!!! After I rebooted, I log in as root and I get a blank desktop, no taskbar or icons or anything. I can log on as root and use the KDE desktop though. Also I can logon under my regular user account and get the Gnome desktop. The problem is with the root Gnome desktop. The only thing I get is the mouse cursor. Any help with this is appreciated. TIA

Just a followup to my own post. I renamed the .gnome directories in the root folder and once I logged on again it recreated them and fixed the problem.
