Looking to convert .MOV files to *?* so as to be able to E-mail them better.

I have a camera that will only save 'movie files' as .MOV

This seems to make even a short movie into a BIG file and, therefore, more difficult to e-mail.

I have a PC running Ubuntu 8.04 and would like to find a file converter that even a Linux dunce, like me, can use to convert .MOV files to something more suitable. My CD burner, with K3b, will not allow me to even burn a CD from these files.

TIA.

It seems that ffmpeg can do that. See also this post.

Have you checked out avidemux yet..
http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/
should be in Mepis repos
I believe it will open .mov files. It says on its wiki page it supports quicktime files..
"Simple 3GP/MP4/QuickTime files, compressed headers are not supported"
It can export it as avi,mpeg,flv...bunch of others..
And theres Kino..a video editor that supports .mov files...that should be in repo to
http://www.kinodv.org/
also kdenlive
http://www.kdenlive.org/
also
http://cinelerra.org/index.php

Kdenlive and cinelerraa are probably more than you need..as they are do compositing and video and audio effects..

Thanks for your interest.

I checked out the link and then went to Synaptic and installed 'mencoder', along with 'iriverter'.

I'm using a PC with Ubuntu 8.04. Under Applications > Sound & Video, I can see 'iriverter' but not 'mencoder'.

When I click on 'iriverter', nothing happens, it doesn't open. Also have haven't been able to find 'mencoder'.

Synaptic shows 'mplayer', 'mencoder' and 'iriverter' all to be the latest version.

Any help will be appreciated.

well..mencoder isnt a application you run..its command line or used by other programs like Mplayer,Acidrip...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mencoder
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en...ing-guide.html
Id recommend you use a app with gui like Kino..Kino will do what you want...

as far as "iriverter",I googled it and it requires java..do you have java installed?

+1 xvidenc

also consider scp or a httpd instead of emailing large files.

Thank you.

Yes, I have ' Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_07-b06 ' and I will now explore the rest of these links.

OK, I'm making progress. Thanks.

I was able to convert a .MOV file to a .flv file and it didn't seem to lose any visual or audio quality.

I appreciate your help.
