Looking for Way to Record Streaming Audio

This is perma jan in eugene, oregon.

I am maybe third grade level with linux.

Here is a question. I want to record streaming audio from a radio station.

Sounds simple. I have been googling, following various suggestions and have come up with nothing. There is a lot of geek speek.

I have nothing too special on my system. I have WINE, Audacity.

One source said i could record with audacity but the input setting suggested wasn't avaialble on my audacity.

So, any suggestions appreciated!

I suggest reading a bit more on Audacity. It will record anything that passes through your sound card or chip. That said most streaming audio and video is copyrighted. I would think this might fall under the fair use laws but I'm definitely not a lawyer nor an expert. That's up to you to decide.

But the answer is Audacity and I would be using it in native Linux not the Windows version in Wine.

have you recorded streaming audio with audacity?

again i compare the directions to recored streaming

directions say choose wave out or stereo mix from the drop down menus of the mixer tool bar

but which drop down? file, edit, view, i checked them all and found nothing like wave out or stereo mix , suggestions?

to choose input, i could not even find a place that says input source

maybe i have an older version of audacity, what instructions describe, i dont find

You may need to use a mixer such as kmix or alsamixer to adjust your settings for the sound-card. In doing this, I believe it may help to make sure that capture is enabled, and that the volume for line or line2 is up. I'm just guessing though. Basically I think you should play around with the settings via a mixer, and then use audacity for the recording of your streamed sounds.

Without jack running, audacity can record from the audio inputs of you soundcard, but that's not what you want. You can install jack (jack-audio-connection-kit) and jackrecord and sent the output of the streaming application to the input of jackrecord. If you're using Ubuntu or some of its derivatives check kxstudio for an easy way to have those apps installed.
Or you can just use streamripper or kstreamripper.

I am not an expert or anything close. I just read it was possible and installed the native version in LMDE. When the program was about to start I clicked the record button. When it ended I closed it. I save in the native audacity format and later exported to wav. I then converted the wav to mp3. My assumption is the source is automatically detected upon clicking record. Give it a go on anything streaming audio. Sorry I can't give more specifics, I simply don't have them. :)

Always nice to have friends in the know. Audacity is a great tool in the hands of the knowledgable. Mine not so much but I was able to record a show. My goal was easy. To listen to a show later on my commute instead of late on Sunday night.
