looking for small distro with GUI for newbie
 

Hello,

I'm looking for some small distro's of linux.
I'm trying to setup an environment in Oracle Virtual box to play with some networking tools (mikrotik, ntopng, etc...)

To generate some networktraffic - and play with linux- I wanted to install some virtual clients on my system.
However, after playing whole day with a lot of distro's, I found that a minimal installation of linux takes approx 5Gb on my HD
I installed
5.1GB linux-sparkylinux-43-mate
5.9GB ubuntu-16.04
6.6GB debian-8.50
7.6GB linuxmint-1.8
4.5GB solus-1.2
225MB TinyCorePlus-7.2

Exept for this last one, it's al around 5Gb.

So I just installed an old Windows XP -> 1.5Gb



No I am wondering if there are any good distro's from around 1Gb wich have some basic apps installed and are easy to use for a newbie like me...

I'd say do a netinstall in the VM of Debian, then build only what you need from it. Use a tiling WM instead of a full DE, skip office suites, etc. Can easily be made ~1 GB.

I like Slitaz however it has some limits to being able to install programs. Worth a try.

Two parts to a modern linux distro basically. One is the base system. Almost all common ones have that same base system. Two is the window manager. By default most distro's give you way more than you need on both. This has been mentioned above basically.


Along with looking up minimal distro's you may wish to create your own as mentioned in Gentoo but also Linux from Scratch or build it from sites like SuseStudio.com.

There may be some already built VM's on sites. Vmware I believe has some of what might be termed appliances and some dedicate vm hosting sites. Oracle may even have a vm built.
