looking for info on crontab and schduling


I want to write a scrite to back up a linux database ....once the script is written I want to schedule it. I am having trouble wrapping my head around the crontab file.

at the command prompt I type crontab -e and I get teh vi editor....is all there is to it is to schedule the job using the cron commands to call my script at a certain time ? where could i get examples of the crontab script and the backup script ?
