Could you... post that long-winded error? It's a bit hard to work out what the problem is with the information you gave us

Try this:

Code:
$ cd ~/.config/banshee-1
$ sqlite3 banshee.db ".dump" > dump
$ mv banshee.db banshee.db.backup
$ cat dump | sqlite3 banshee.db
Then run banshee again...

okay i gave up on banshee.....

and use amarok now which works pretty well. i am using linux 2.3.3 w/t ubuntu 10.10 maverick. i no very little about this os and how to use terminal. so far specific problems are that a. i downloaded certain programs from the synaptic package and update manager. i now cannot find or activate some of these. the programs downloaded with the ubuntu software center work fine. b. both vuse and playonlinux will not connect to the internet and i have no ideas other than that i use comcast so apparently my nat problem is unsolvable. as for playonlinux i imagine that the same problem is happening. firefox works great and amarok works great everything is good except for these few issues, any good advice is much appreciated.

For some of the programs you may have to be logged on as admin. or administrator to use.
For others you may have to "right click" the the top left bar, click edit menu, and dig through all the options available click on the options you want to use.
In my own trial and errors so far, some programs are incomplete so after using Ubuntu software center. You may have to go into Synaptic Package Manager to down load the other options available to the software of your choosing. Other times Ubuntu does not keep "up to date" with every available software available, (but I do applaud them for getting most), so you may have to go physically to the site of you choosing, and download the latest and greatest.
Last but not least read up on as many wiki and forum sites as possible, this is not the only site available, Ubuntu has their own community site, in fact several dedicated to Ubuntu users. So google your specific question, and see how many others may have the same question, or at least similar, and see how their solutions play out. It may just help.

P.S. you may also want to check the software section and possibly linux tutorials and wiki in this forum

I am in no way close to being moderately knowledgeable and yes still very green behind the ears, but I do hope I helped some :/

Yeah, generally you won't use synaptic package manager to install software. The package manager is more for installing libraries you *can* install things using the package manager, but it's almost always a lot easier to use the Ubuntu Software Centre. Like 1nf3s73d said, you can also build programmes from source, which works as well.

These are both Windows emulators, so you would expect them to be more buggy than a native Linux programme. Personally, I actually retain a copy of Windows on my hard drive (dual-booted) so that I can run programmes without using Playonlinux. However, if you run playonlinux from a terminal it is possible that you will see some error messages which give you informations as to why it's not connecting to the internet

Hope this helps,
