Is there any way to get a cheap Logitech camera working with Skype/Lubuntu 10.10 which I just installed to my laptop compaq nx9010? Cheese is working OK, but Skype-Options-Video Devices-test picture gives me nothing but black. Skype recognizes the camera though, as to be USB Camera (046d:08d9) (/dev/video0).On my other computer (this one, Ubuntu 10.10) I have a Creative camera, works out of the box...
Grateful for any advice, if possible.
Distribution: Slackware, Windows, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Mac OS X
Hi teboil12, Welcome to LQ. If the device is working with Cheese, then it may be a Skype incompatibility issue or possibly another program is using the camera? Have you checked that Cheese or any other possible suspects have released the camera? That's what i would check first.
Hi teboil12, I had the same problem with my logitech (a very cheap one) and got the black screen in cheese too. While trying different things I found that if I increased brightness to the max it worked. The image is nothing to write home about, but then it is a cheap one so I'm ok with it. Don't know if yours is the same issue, but it's worth a shot.
Thanx for the help, but I'll tell you what I did: decided to skip Lubuntu 10.10 and installed Ubuntu 10.10 instead. To my surprise, the camera that did not co-operate on my desktop computer and had to be replaced with a Creative camera started working on the laptop at once, no problems whatsoever!!! Wonderful, now I can use the camera I almost threw away...
