Login Manager - GNOME

Hello Linux Friends,
:newbie:

So far the support here has been grand, now onto problem 3 day 4 linux user. I began to apply some themes to spruce up the ol display right, yea.

I have applied a rather nice looking theme from art.gnome.org, for the Login Manager of gnome. And well it's corrupt I get an error message and can never get to the login.

<< <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

THERE WAS AN ERROR LOADING THE THEME GDM-Debian

Failed to load image 'usr/share/gdm/themes/GDM-Debian/walldeb.png'
Fatal error in PNG image file: incorrect data check

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I have searched :study: and found cntrl-alt-f1 gets Me to the command line, but then what!?

So again I humbly seek the guidance of those who have come before Me. :( Just in case you need to know I am running fedora core 1. Now I am not far into the scheme of things so I could just start over, but what good does it do to learn linux if I cannot learn to fix My mistakes.

Thanks in Advance,
:Pengy:

You got the command line and the you have two main ways to fix gdm.
First one, you can get another background and replace the one that's corrupt. You'd need a picure and commands that will allow you to copy files and so on. I recommend you to chekc if you have Midninght Commander ('mc' command). It should make it much easier. If Mmc is not installed it's on one of your installation cds.

Second: Start X manually and change what you need. The command to start GUI without login manager is 'startx' when you're logged in on console.
