Login into Ubuntu 11.04

Hi All

I am samuel and I am very new to ubuntu. I have looked at linux before but have done no serious usage.

I heard about Ubuntu and am excited to really try it.

Of course my first hurdle is "How do I login? Whats the username to use and what is the default password"

That what brought me here immediately.

Looking forward to the help of others to get me up to speed

The live CD shouldn't have a login at all and if you installed it to hard disk you should have set a username and password as part of the install. Where is it prompting you for a name and password?

Welcome to LQ.

It indeed should not but I've seen numerous occasions where the live CD does ask for user name and password. Unfortunately I've never been able to figure out what to enter and under which occasions this happens. On the same system, it sometimes asks and sometimes it does not ask.

To zinnis:
as XavierP asked, how do you use Ubuntu?

If liveCD,
  1. somewhere (in the first menu) is an option to check the disk for defects (but it's a bit hidden and I'm not sure where)
  2. burn a new copy (at lowest speed); do NOT use rewritable CDs or use a fresh one
  3. you can try to create a live USB stick (instructions can be found on the Ubuntu download site) and boot from that (if your system supports it).

As far as I have seen, the live CDs which ask for password auto login after waiting for a few seconds.

It should auto login but if not just click on login button and it will auto login from there. Also you don't need enter sudo password in live mode but still need indicate you want run stuff with sudo.

Apologies for not knowing the 'buntu answer.

FWIW, the SimplyMEPIS live CD does have 2 logins, "demo" & "root", & their passwords are the same as the usernames. (Demo - demo, root - root.) This is very simple & easy to remember, but also very insecure. OTOH, who cares about security on a demo CD.

I have never waited long enough to see SimplyMEPIS live CD do an automatic log in.

thanks to all. This should help. I will try the Demo-demo, root - root as suggested.
