Login freezing/not working on 2 Ubuntu versions and Mint 6.0

Hello everyone.
I was using Ubuntu 8.10, when someday, when a restarted the laptop the login screen was flushing continuously and i wasn't able to login. Only with ALT+F1 i could get into the sistem. Since anyway i was planning to upgrade to 9.04, i didn't bother to see what was happend.

Then i run 9.04 for a few days when the same problem occured. That was very ugly, i belived it was because of some bugs in Ubuntu distributions since it happend on two diferent bersion.

I heard of Linux Mint, so i have installed it 3 days ago, and now it is the same problem, login screen does not load, keeps flushing and playing the welcome sound in backgroud continuously - now am writing from an ugly windows XP.

Since it apear that it is doing something in the backgroud like it was tring to show the login screen i get into concole and i looked at:

tail -f /var/log/syslog and it keep showing repeatedly something like this:

gdmgreeter [7197]: GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL: gdk_pixbuf_get_width: assertion `GDK_IS_PIXBUF (pixbuf)' failed
gdmgreeter [7197]: GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL: gdk_pixbuf_get_height: assertion `GDK_IS_PIXBUF (pixbuf)' failed
..................................and so on among other few lines.

Can anyone help me "get back" my login screen? I don't know what to do, and i cannot find an answer on google.
I really dont want to do another fresh install, and dont want windows neither.

Added later:
I manage to get some logs while the login screen was flashing. All the lines are added continuously:

So, does anyone seen this kind of behavior?

looks to me like the GDM: Gnome Display Manager cannot get a lock on the video card.

sounds/looks like a hardware issue to me, especially since you have tried reinstalling.

I did some research these days, and i thought that i have resolved the problem. I have a NVIDIA grphic card on my laptop. I have installed the latest nvidia drivers version 180.

It worked great for a few days, but now, the same thing happends whith the login screen, but in /var/log/syslog i keep getting the folowind lines, each time the login screen tryes to apear:

gdm[2925]: WARNING: Couldn't authenticate user
gdm[2925]: WARNING: Couldn't authenticate user
gdm[2925]: WARNING: Couldn't authenticate user
................................and again and again, about each 2 seconds.

If i try glxinfo (which befor the problem showed me all kind of info about graphic card and driver) it sais: Error: unable to open display

Any ideeas?

You're doing something unusual alright, and I'm not sure is it you or the computer! Would really need to see it in order to help.

Okay, can you post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf I'll see can I help out!
