login as root to RHET 5 display blank screen

After booting the system i login to RHET 5 as root it displays blank screen.

I hope someone could tell me how to resolve this issue, please

You shouldn't be logging in as root. If there is work you need to do on the system log in as a normal user and either su to root or use the sudo command. It's just bad security to log in as root.

Do you get a blank screen when you log in as a normal user?

Initially when i logged as root or normal user it displays blank screen.

I logged in as root to failsafe session and deleted some alterartion i made to /etc/profile. After this i could log into the GDM session (GUI)
as root only but any attempt to log in as a normal user still displays blank screen.

I used CTRL + ALT + F1 to get to vitual terminal but the password and username were not accepted
