logging on as "root"


can someone explain what "logging as a root" is? I have assumed it is just logging onto RedHat as the user name "root", yet what I need to do doesn't get done (installing a program). Is this basically the same as logging on as "admin" done in NT or W2000?

basically put to the windows world. root=admin, god, almighty with no restrictions on the system he is in control of.
