Logging in as root user in the shell with suse 9.1

Hi, I'm a newbie. I use Suse linux 9.1 Personal.
When I type "su" in the shell as a regular user to open a root shell, it asks me the root password. I try to type it, but after very few seconds it says that the password is wrong, without giving me neither the time to type it! What should I do?
I know that maybe It's a foolish problem...but I've been using linux just for 3 days.

thanks

I

I am assuming that you are doing this through X Windows (graphical interface).
Try switching to a virtual terminal (<Ctrl><Alt><F1> or <F2> or ... to <F6>)
Give root for username and type the password
Does that work?

If it did work, Press <Ctrl>D to exit
Press <Ctrl><Alt><F7> or <Alt><F7> to return to the graphical user interface.

Just some things to see if it is some terminal setting in X Windows. I have had problems with X Windows terminal sessions before.
