Unhappy Loggin in problem

Hi,

I've installed Dualboot Ubuntu with WinXP, a number of times using different methods like using Wubi, using live CD on two different machines.

P4, Intel845 motherboard, 80GB HD (10 for ext3 and 1GB swap)

I get to loggin screen and select session GNOME, i only see orange colored wallpaper and that is it, no disk activity, no sign of loading something or installing some thing. Mouse keeps wandering around when i move it, rest nothing.

However, when i select terminal loggin, i get to see the text based shell. But since i am a baby in Linux, i dont know what exactly the problem is with linux installation.

I tried to loggin to root but i dont know what was the password as i only gave the password for user profile during installation. Installation remains smooth with no problems as such.

please help me
