Log file directory questions

Is the Linux log directory is located at /var/log ?

Also, what file logs superuser access and is it in /var/log ? I can't tell if /var/log/messages is the superuser access logfile.

Yes /var/log is the place to look. For logins etc (including root), try /var/log/auth.log.

Cheers,

you might want to install the logwatch package. It is a configurable perl script to scan the logs periodically looking for the things in which you are interested.
