Location of $HOME/.config directory? (Very newbie...)

Hello all. Just starting to use Ubunutu Linux here...

A software package (Darktable, to be specific), says to place user-created graphics (SVG watermarks, to be precise) in the $HOME/.config/darktable/watermarks directory.

Where, exactly, is the $HOME/.config directory located? I assume that $HOME is a variable specific to where Darktable is installed, but I'm not finding such a location as I explore the file system using the "Home Folder" tool.

Thanks much!

$HOME is a way to specify YOUR USER's home folder. Typically found in /home/user/

The .config folder will be hidden, cntrl+h typically allows hidden folders to be visible in your filemanager.

Thank you! cntrl-h did reveal the $HOME/.config/darktable directory, but oddly no "watermarks" subdirectory within that directory. Creating that directory and putting the graphic there did not add it to the list of available watermarks in the Darktable software.

I did a search for one of the watermark files that *is* listed within the software, and found it in the /usr/share/darktable/watermarks directory. That folder is owned by root, though, and I've been advised not to put user files outside of the user home directory.

Would it be adviseable to login as root and do this?

I'm not familiar with the software. you could double check your spelling (capitalization counts!).

it probably won't hurt to put your files in that folder in this case.
