local search engine ??

Hi,

I am using Fedora Core 1.

I am connected to a heterogeneous local area network of windows "boxes" and linux "machines".Now i am thinking of some sort of local search engine, so that i can just type in any filename and see if it's available on the network.

How can this be achieved?. Coz it does take a lot of time to explore every P.C. on the network and look for files in it.

Somebody help me in this.

Thanx in anticipation.

The "least-hassle" approach would be to nominate one
of the Linux boxes as the "database", have it mount all
other machines (smb for WinDOHs, nfs for Linux) and
modify (s)locates rules to follow networked file-systems
as well ...

Cheers,
Tink
