[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
when i turn on my it gives me a message saying
loading grub.
that is all it says, it gives me no error message, but it will not load past that. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 and i have tried to reinstall ubuntu. when i did reinstall Ubuntu, i booted up my cpu and it went to the grub menu asking me which OS i would like to use. it worked perfectly until i rebooted my CPU. my other os is microsoft windows xp(it's my mom's cpu also, please respond quickly.

So your current state is a message saying
"Loading grub..."

And the system pauses there?

I would say boot with the Ubuntu LiveCD again. I think it has an option for re-install grub boot loader.
You may end up having to put the Windows bootloader back in and use a second physical hard disk to install Ubuntu, so as to avoid getting into this mess.

Odd problem that maybe caused by the MBR of the disk being corrupted.

You might need to blow away the MBR and then re-install grub

http://www.debianhelp.org/node/7310
Quote:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1

That will erase any MBR. If your drive is not /dev/hda then please use
the proper one (such as /dev/hde or /dev/sda or what have you)

Then..

http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-24113.html
Quote:
1. Pop in the Live CD, boot from it until you reach the desktop.
2. Open a terminal window or switch to a tty.
3. Type "grub"
4. Type "root (hd0,6)", or whatever your harddisk + boot partition numbers are (my /boot is at /dev/sda7, which translates to hd0,6 for grub).
5. Type "setup (hd0)", ot whatever your harddisk nr is.
6. Quit grub by typing "quit".
7. Reboot.
