live cd error reading boot cd

I am having a laptop with Vista installed on it. I have an Ubuntu live CD (karmic) which is refusing to boot on this machine. I get an error : "Error reading boot CD" and a reboot button. I have tried this cd on other machines and it works fine. I tried live CD of kubuntu also but the same error message appears. What could be the reason?

Machine spec: 2GB RAM, Intel core 2 duo processor.

Sometimes a CD/DVD cannot be read by all drives. Try burning it on the system that won't boot the live media.

Since your system is so new you might start by considering a virtual machine.

A tie to that might be to also start using live usb flash drives. They are almost as fast as normal hd installs and cheap and easy. See pendrivelinux.com

As to the disk you might try it on one or more other systems. Live cd's are pretty safe to try. You can simply boot and then shutdown to be safe.

As with most linux and solaris cd's they sometimes don't like what is termed overburn. You can't burn at the fastest speeds. You should "always" use the slowest burn speed that your system allows. Use also good quality cd's.

Thanks for those comments. But I had used the same Live CD to install Ubuntu on the same system some months before. Now, because of some other issues I wanted to reinstall it. Then only the problem had cropped up. I have tried a newly burned CD (burned at 10x, that was the lowest my system could cough up) also, but in vain. I even tried Live CD of Mandriva One just to check. But it also does not complete the boot. I guess the problem is much deeper.

And yes, I have tried the same Live CD on a couple of other machines. It works.

On boot does it let you press space key to access menu with test disk?
