Hi all first off all i wanna present myself i am LeXeL from Panamá
i got a problem with ubuntu
i use wubi to install ubuntu in another hard drive the first time it was all great the download everything, then i restart computer, the system was installed then i put my user and pass and then a orange page came up nothing there i can do nothing.
then a friend tell me re download it so i did it and wubi again all night... bla,bla,bla then when i try to choose between ubuntu and XP they send me this
Error 1

filename must be either an absolute pathname or blocklist

pres any key to continue...

I realy need help please

There is something about you mbr.. Do you know what it is??

If not don't worry about.. just take a breath and carefully tell us what did you do since this problem...

remember, we are not saying what you say, and cannot read what you read...

ok first thnx for replies and i am not panic ok i first download all the wubi first time and everything was ok
it loads normaly i enter the ubuntu program download all the system then alot things happend and then it ask me for username and password do i put them and it apear a orange desktop it was taking so long and i went to sleep so i wake up the next day (8 hours later) and still this orange screen so i enter windows and go to the hard drive look for ubuntu and unistall then i enter wubi again an i donwload it again thinking something with the download was wrong...
then when it ends i restart computer enter ubuntu and say me this

so if i press enter it apear a screen with alot of option one of them normal mode i press enter again and nothing and tell me alot of thing didnt remember at this moment so i think it was something wrong so again i restart and again the problem then restart again and still the error

so i enter windows normaly and no problem with windows

1st of all i must ask you what is "wubi"??
Before we can understand your problem we cannot issue a fix, .. ok??
let's start with "what is the problem".. that is ok???

so you are trying to install the ubuntu that Runs IN a running Microsoft Windows OS
-- i have not used it because i never saw a reason to run linux IN/ON top of a running windows xp --
As far as i know the *nix fixes I know will not work for that you can not install grub in the mbr because nothing will ever work then.

Now i know what wubi is

There are at least 2 things you must see.. the first is It seems like windows boot manager is not finding correct file to load, I don't know where you can check this inside windows.

Second, as i read, wubi is intended to install ubuntu in a folder inside windows main partition, it means, the final installation will be using ntfs or fat32(as your windows installation), wich are not linux native, specially ntfs that have several issues within linux kernel. So as you said installed wubi in another hard disk, check windows boot manager config to see if it have right paths to the wubi install.

Once you have a hard disk dedicated to wubi, i suggest you to make a clean install for ubuntu from the cd (or dvd). you'll have only positive effects from this.

yeah i you are right i am only downloading ubuntu normally and execute it but i wanna know
can i select the destination or were i want ubuntu to instal itself?

Once you've downloaded and burned the image to CD, insert the CD in the drive and restart your PC. Use the defaults in the partition manager, and Ubuntu will install itself separate from Windows and then configure Grub (the boot loader) to let you choose Ubuntu or Windows at startup.

Yes, you can booth, do an automagic install answering only few questions as dragonslayer48dx said, or, edit manually your preferences. I never had installed any system in my machines the first way, I have partitions with really important and old things wich i don't want to loose and won't put it in risk by a decision made for software that a don't know.

If you have important things think it's better to choose some options for that you must select "expert install" or so, if all your stuffs can be recovered in a way or another, than make the simple install wich is the default.

Take a look at read, take some notes about procedures and you'll be fine.
