[B]Hi I found out from Linux that the DSL Modem 175 does not work wiht Linux they want to sell you a special one for linux op it is the 760 Modem and they want $ 100 for it. Sorry have to go back to Windows.Brrrrrr Nick

You need to provide a little more detail. Distribution? Modem manufacture?

Howto: Verizon UM175 USB EVDO under Hardy
Before starting, have your updates done. At the time I'm writing this, 2.6.24-19-generic is the current stable -generic kernel. Everything here also works fine on the 2.6.24-21-eeepc kernel on my eeePC 1000, running Hardy. Also install gnome-ppp before you get started. You'll need to know your UM175's phone number as well. For this guide, I'll assume it's 212-555-1212.

Step 1. Plug the device in. Ok, you’re done Step 1.

Step 2. Launch gnome-ppp, configure settings, other than the defaults:

* Modem Tab
o Device: /dev/ttyACM0
o Type: USB Modem
o Speed: 460800
o Phone Line: Tone
o Volume: Off

* Options Tab
o Minimize: checked
o Dock in Notification Area: checked


Click Close. Fill in the fields in the main Gnome PPP window:

* Username: 2125551212@vzw3g.com
* Password: vzw
* Phone Number: #777


Step 3. Click Connect

Step 4. There is no step 4. You’re connected.

Modem
The Modem I have is a Verizon 175 dsl modem and I was told by Verizon that this one will not work whit Linux os. What can I say. I went back to Windows,nd it works fine on my 4 computers.

I have no experience with this modem and I could only google for solutions, anyone can do that. No guarantee that you will find them though.

However I can give you two advices so my post is not completely useless: if you really have to change the modem, buy a modem that can be connected via an rj45 cable to a regular ethernet cad. That way you guarantee that the modem will work under any OS, as long as the network card works as well. You don't need any specific 100U$D modem, you can use any DSL modem that can be connected to your network plug. Second: if you really plan to run linux, buy hardware that can be used with Linux. Note that if you buy a mac and want a printer, you probably buy a printer that can work with MacOS. It's the same.
