Linux_Mint_13(Mate)_64 dual core question (problem)

Hello,

Problem with Linux Mint 13 Mate 64 bit OS. Question is, what could it be that, lscpu shows only 1 cpu instead of 2? I have Intel Dual Core CPU 3400Mhz. Ofcourse this error loads cpu almost to 100% all the time.

Thank you in advance for all your help.

LSCPU:
Architecture: x86_64
CPU op-mode(s): 32-bit, 64-bit
Byte Order: Little Endian

It would help to know which CPU you actually have. Please post the output of
Code:
cat /proc/cpuinfo
between code-tags.

l1 cache 16K, L2 2MB....sounds like a P4 (or maybe a Pentium D with a broken core) to me.

Edit- thats probably a P4 HT 650 or 651. They are 'hyperthreading' CPU that can appear to be a dual core, but are just a single core in reality.

*see below*

Ok, 1 problem found, it is CPU and it is only 1 core. What could be the problem then for cpu to be loaded 100%?

Which version of ubuntu are you using? What video card/chip are you using, and how much RAM do you have?

What process is using 100% cpu? You can run "top" to see.

I guees i am being over drammatic, but Compiz is the one to blame. Dragging window around loads up cpu, that leads to a weird lag. I have here Dual core 1,6 mhz Intel cpu. If i upgrade 1 core p4 with Dual Core will it fix the problem?

I though you might have had low RAM and/or a dodgy video card. Shouldnt be a problem with 7GB (odd number, and very rare to get more than 4GB with P4s/Pentium Ds) and a 4850 video card. BTW, you cant really compare the CPU load on a intel dual core with your P4/Pentium D system. Intel video hardware is very weak, and things like compiz can use the CPU with intel video. 1.6GHz makes me think its probably a intel atom which is a low powered CPU as well.

I guess its a hardware problem.

If lshw and/or your BIOS is reporting you have a Pentium D but can only see one core, you have had a CPU core and/or motherboard problem. The other working core could have been damaged by whatever caused the problem with the dead core.
