Unhappy linux wont install!!!!!!!!!

hey guys i am new to linux and tried to install red hat 9.it showed an error saying
XIO: fatal IO error 104 .connection reset by peer after 0 requests.(0 processes done).0 events remaining.

i tried using slackware 9.1 but after logging in when i typed gui or guifast it said "frequency out of range" so i tried using startx and then it gave the same error 104 as above.

When did you get this error? Did the install finish and you got this error afterwards, when you tried to run it?

Do you know what graphics card you have? What is your hardware configuration? Tell us all you know. I think the graphics card is the most important.

Martin

I think that's because you haven't run xf86config before you startx for the first time - you need to set your monitors horizontal and vertical sync frequencies, which will be in your monitor manual.

i got this error while installation had just started for red hat 9 and in case of slackware after logging in i was supposed to type "gui" or "guifast" giving the requisite resolution.i tried it but it said sync. out of range so i tried startx and then after having started processing within 15-20 secs it showed the error.
i dont know what the problem is.
my pc is P4 1.7 ghz with asus motherboard and SIS 650 chipset.128 mb ddr ram
