linux won't start after checks
 

I have downloaded Redhat linux 9.0. I installed it without a problem but when it came to the monitor it did not have mine listed. So i went with whatever those default setting that showed up were.

Now when i run RedHat from lilo it goes through all the check and will only flash the login for a sec and then it just stops sending a single to the monitor. THe monitor shuts off completely but the computer (and i assume, the program) is still running.

I tried hitting ctrl-x to get into single mode and it brought me to some weird prompt halfway through the checks. I typed in redhat-config-xfree86 at the prompt and it went to the login again and did the same thing.

I don't have a boot disk because my 3.5 drive is broken (spilled soda - don't ask how it got in that drive). Is there anyway I can get back in and adjust the monitor settings???

I had the same problem with SuSu 8.2 Pro. But when I choose default startup it ran fine. (like safe mode?). I got pissed an scraped it for dependable old Mandrake 9.1.

And i have no idea how to run RedHat in safe mode.

The prompt that comes up is sh-2.056 (or 'b')#

I typed in 'login' there and it took me to the login prompt but asked for a username. I have never entered a username into this thing (only a password). Do i have to do a 1st boot thing or something??

Smart enought to know to type root then password.

Problem is that now when i try a command like '/etc/x11/xf86Config' it tells me i do not have permission.

I just need to change monitor drivers.. PLEASE HELP!!

using vi and change the monitor to the appopriate refresh rates. Still not working.

That config file is a bugger. I'm afraid you are going to have to spend time at XFree86.org and read a whole bunch.

At the site you will also get the exact command syntax to pass to the kernal for vesa framebuffer something or other. Anyway, there is a "fail-safe" parameter you can pass to boot up. They have the command on the site somewhere.

I warn you, the site is fairly large and your brain will hurt. There will be explanations of the syntax for each section of the configuration file and what it means.

I am tired and going now. But I figured some response was better than none.
