Linux with low virtual memory

I want to install Linux on an older Dell laptop without much virtual memory.
This laptop will be for guests and "children" to use.
Computers are not my forte'.
Please make suggestions as to how I should go about this. Specifically what is the title of the set of programs best suited for my situation.
I thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Mr. BlueHolly
