Linux/Windows/Macs....Oh my! Need help with Samba

I am very new to Linux. As I read through the posts and see what some of the other "newbies" have to say, I see how new. But I have went from having no idea what an RPM was to edit config files for this and that in just a few days so I, in general, am not feeling too bad about my technical ability.

HOWEVER....My whole idea behind setting up a linux box was to use it as a server on my home network for file storage, backup and as a music server (hopefully to stream to itunes and winamp). After a few days of setting up and learning, I am finally to the stage where I am configuring Samba, but things aren't going so well.

My primary computer is a Mac running OS X 10.2.6 so I am most concerned with getting it set up for sharing but after I have connected to my shared folder on the server when I try to transfer files from the Mac I get Error Code -43 "Option cannot be completed because one or more of the required items cannot be found"

I have searched far and wide in the forums and via google for some help on this but haven't found much about it so any help would be appreciated.

Also if you have other suggestions of better ways to do this I am open to those as well. The main reason I have been trying Samba is becasue I figured it would work best with a network running the three different OSes.

Btw, the Windows machine is running XP and the Linux box is RH9. Also the server is in run level 3 with smbd and nmbd running.

we need a little more information on how you setup samba before we can help you. first, what exactly did you do to configure samba? did you create samba users? map linux accounts to win accounts? did you create your shares in the /etc/samba/smb.conf file? are all your computers in the same workgroup? can you go into my network places in winxp and see your linux box? your mac (yuck...sorry lol) box?

Thanks for the reply. Your quesetions actually got me looking at the right things and I ended up figuring it out (ever thought of being a Zen-master? haha) It was essentially a problem with permission and ownership of the sared folder, which I realised when I started looking at how I had set them up. Since I had created it as root, I had to chown to make it accesible to my other account. But, unfortunately it is still not perfect yet, now when I tired to copy my MP3'a they appear to be copying properly; I don't get any error messages and the progress bar comes up and does it's thing all the way, but I don't see the files on the server afterwards. I have used ls -a in the directory they should be in and found nothing. Nor have I found anything by searching using "find files" in Gnome, so I don't think it's that they are not showing up, i think they're not there. For some reason it seems to work fine with text files though. So any help you or anyone could give in that area would be, again, greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the response to my previous question. It certainly helped me figure the problem out much more quickly than if I had been on my own.

Btw, if it's still relevant, the computers are on the same workgroup, and in general I can see the server with the XP comp and connect fine. (Haven't tried transferring yet now that i have that problem mostly worked out, I am sure that would be very benificial to know for diagnosing the new issue, but that will have to wait until morning, I am not waiting for that thing to boot up again tonight :)
