linux update

The problem is that you are running Linux on a non-standard platform that has little software support. The PS3's processor (at least when running in Linux mode) is nothing more than a PowerPC chip, which doesn't have nearly the software support of x86. This means that for closed source binary programs like the Flash plugin, you are at the mercy of the developer (Adobe).

There is nothing anybody can do about this (short of creating an OSS Flash plugin, which has been attempted).

thx for the quick reply...so are you saying that its up to adobe when they decide to updade or maybe they never will?...and do you think they will update the ps3 to. thx again.

If I understand you correctly, the question is: Will Adobe support Linux on the PS3?

For any company to invest in supporting a platform, they have to see where the market is going. Linux on PS3 is maybe too small of a niche for them to be interested in.

I thought flash was a plugin for the browser. Is it platform-dependent?

"I thought flash was a plugin for the browser. Is it platform-dependent?"

Absolutely. The plugin still needs to call the libraries to get its job done.

The best you can do at the moment is to use 'gnash' - however, it's a few revisions behind the latest Flash since Adobe suddenly became so secretive with Flash again. Unfortunately, most online news sites keep telling me my version of flash is not new enough - I imagine you'd have the same problem with gnash.

ok thx guys. i dont have a pc rite now so linux on ps3 is great as an OS. its just a pitty you cant stream video...but who knows maybe in the near future. ill give gnash a try. thx again.

"its just a pitty you cant stream video..."

Of course you can stream video, and you can also play video streams. That really hasn't got much to do with 'Flash'.

Welcome to LQ!! But no, you are not in the right place. This is a new question which has nothing to do with the current thread.

Please post a new thread. When you do, please specify what distro (version) of Linux you are using.

Visit http://swfdec.freedesktop.org/

It has a plugin for mozilla, and it's supposed to compile on powerpc, so, it should work as well on ps3. However, I haven't tried it myself (in either ppc nor ps3). It works for youtube, for example. About the rest of video stuff, you could try installing mplayerplug-in or vlc. Gxine also has a plugin I think but it's long since I used it.
