Actually UNIX was rewritten in C for the PDP-11 (it was originally coded in PDP-7 Assembly) by Dennis Ritchie in 1972. He specifically "invented" C as an extension of his and Ken Thompson's B/NB (a language that never saw widespread use) to be able to port UNIX to the PDP-11.

C is widely used, and has been the language of choice when creating more than one OS. One that you may have heard of, Microsoft Windows, was/is also written in C.

Just a little piece of trivia.
