Linux to rival win98SE on PII 400 2656mb ram
 

Hi,
Call me a heretic if you like but I am new to linux and want ot know is there a way I can install/setup linux on my PII 400 256mb ram so that it will rival win98SE for speed and ease of use?

I have been using win98 for a few years and recently had a pretty major crash with it, so I installed the RH9.0 that I had sitting in a drawer,I knew oneday I would get around to using it, the problem is that is seems quite slow and the learning curve is quite steep, just dialling into ISP is an effort. Stuffed if I know how I am going to teach the wife.

Due to a lack of knowledge I have done a default desktop install.

Also, my sound (diamond MX300) and video (Monster 3dII)cards don't seem to be supported and my printer (epson C63sx) doesn't work.

the linux kernel supports many motherboards,sounds cards,gfx card so its not that it doesnt support them its just that u need to install and load them into the kernel .now u didnt mention if ur x gui is kde or gnome but any how upgrading ur ram to 512mb would be good idea since the kde,gnome are heavy.so ither go back to 98 wich is a bad idea or upgrade ur ram to 512 that way the gui system for rh will run allot better and u can do ur tasks way faster now if u want to learn how to install ur sound card go to the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture there u can find how to install and load into the kernel ur sound card for it to work and for the gfx to work propely ull need to find the driver for it ,if there is one for linux and edit the /etc/x11/xf86config file becouse this file holds all the display settings for the X system and for the printer ull have to check epson website, u can also go and add it manully by writing "redhat-config-printer" in console, also try doing search for it on google .if u dont want to upgrade and dont have all much of the time to learn linux stick to 98 i guess.goodluck :cool:

No dont stick to 98 because it scks you should download slackware or something because its a very good linux distribution and its easy to learn.
And if you install slackware and use like windowmaker or flux- blackbox as
your gui your pc will work much faster than with Red hat or Win98. :-)

true but slackware is harder then redhat and afterall this guy is new to linux ,u dont want to overload him with knowledge right when he starts to learn about linux do u :D

but ps: if you dont want to use much time learning linux use Red hat

I have had a look around the net and found some hints, simple changes that seem to have helped with speed. Changes such as:
Changing to galeon instead of Mozilla,
changing Desktop environment
changing file manager

So now I would like some hints on DTE and file managers that are lite

Also, can you explain window manager and file manager for me.

Ok first you should use mozilla firbird/firefox
and the difference with window manager and file manager
is that window manager is an manager for the layout
of the dekstop. And file manager is a manager to manage all your files

Heh... no need to do this. I'm running GNOME, OpenOffice.org, Firefox and GAIM on Intel Celeron 333 MHz, Voodoo3 AGP and only 128 Mb of RAM. I've had absolutely no problems.

Well... I little boost wouldn't be too bad but if glenos has PII 400/256 then... Well it's your choice!

The upgrade isnt that expensive its probably sdram
