Linux Threats

Hello all,

As I've done some research on Linux lately I came to consider the threats of Linux. The thing is that if you search of the internet it's always that Linux is a threat for Windows.

From an outdated article I found:
- Risk of Fragmentation
- Lack of Compatible Applications
- Need for Version Control

But which once can we still nowadays consider as a threat to Linux?

thx

Nédée

threat?

You mean as a sort of 'king of desktops'? the biggest threat being the one who gains the largest market share?

I don't see why there need be only one, they each have their own purpose, ethos, user base and functionality.

I'm still not entirely sure what you are trying to obtain from your question??

I think he is trying to say that a 'threat' is something that could harm linux on its way to world domination.

Fragmentation - Not really a problem anymore with the advent of Ext3 and now Ext4 coming in.

Need For version control - Development is fast in the FOSS world, you can't help things like versions being fast. It is a sign of growth, not a threat, IMHO.

Yes, that's my question...
I'm doing some kind of SWOT (Strenght - Weakness - Opportunity - Threats) analyze on Linux. The first 3 are easy to think about but Threats are not... At least I can not find any

Perhaps the biggest threat to Linux is the lack of understanding of computers and SW--especially with our leaders and policy-makers. To a great number of people, a computer is something that is given to you--and controlled by--an IT department. People generally do not buy Operating Systems--they buy boxes with the OS already installed. except for the Mac, the average shopper is not given any alternative to Windows.
Imagine shopping for a car and being given no choice of engines....
