Hi -

Please try this:

On XP, Run "ipconfig/all" from a command prompt.
Print the "ipconfig" text output.
Note your IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS servers.
Note whether or not DHCP is enabled.

Now reboot to SuSE.

Go into Yast, Network devices.
Select and edit your Ethernet card.

If DHCP was enabled for XP, enable it for SuSE. Otherwise,
type in the static address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS
addresses you got from "ipconfig".

Save your Ethernet settings.

From a shell window:
su - root # Be sure you're "root"
ipconfig eth0 # Make sure your Ethernet is "up".
# Verify the Ethernet's IP address and subnet mask
ping YOUR_GATEWAY_IP # Verify that you can "ping" the gateway
ping YOUR DNS_IP # Verify that you can "ping" your DNS server
If you can get that far, you should be home free!

'Hope that helps .. PSM

Linux Suse 9.1 Professional, no internet connection?

In addition to what paulsm4 said, are you using a microsoft braodband network? If so, if your computer using Suse is connected with microsoft's wireless usb adapter, forget trying, it won't connect. It will work if connected using ethernet cable to your router. Some wireless is supported by Suse, but USB adapters of most makes don't seem to be.

ifconfig (Linux) vs. ipconfig (windows)

Hi -
The Linux command you want to run is:
"/sbin/ifconfig eth0"

"IPconfig" is on Windows; "ifconfig" ("network InterFace Configuration") is on Linux).
