Linux Suse 7.3 hangs

Hi, everybody.

I'm quite new to Linux and everything seems to be a problem.
I am having a "hanging" problem with Suse 7.3 which I've just installed. In fact, I've been having it hanging during the installation as well but finally switched to SafeMode in Yast2 menu and installed OK. I've configured kmail and ISP modem connection . Nothing worked OK: Kmail only sent messages but wouldn't receive and the web browser wouldn't go on line at all. After rebooting it would hang in KDE session on any button click.
What could you recommend?

Thanks in advance,
nicki

i don't know exactly how to help you, but let's try. log out of the graphic x system and start 'sax2' logged in as root. this is a setup tool for the x-configuration. this will check the graphic card and monitor settings. maybe there's sth wrong with it. did YaST recognize your hardware at once?
what does 'hang' mean. does everything freeze? does the mouse still work? if you load a terminal, does it work?

suse 7.3 'hangs'

Thanks for the advice. I'll try that.

If that doesn't help maybe i should try to reinstall it once again?
Could I cause any conflicts while configuring internet connections?

by "hanging" I mean everything freezes right after i click on any icon or a program in the start menu of KDE desktop,

the terminal doesn't load.

mouse is alive but nothing responds to the left click: only clicking on the right button allows at least logging out.

yes, yast2 recognized my hardware ok, but as for the monitor and the graphic card Yast2 would hang until I tried the Safe Mode installation(noapic), after that they could be recognised , tested and configured

i'm not an expert in this but it seems the graphic card is not correctly supported. maybe you have to download and install the right driver for your graphic card. (if so a new install of the whole system wouldn't lead far) what card are you using? look at the producer's homepage for a download, if possible as rpm. (it's not a difficult thing to install a driver)
you might have a closer look at /etc/X11/XF86Config using a command line editor like joe or vi. you can find the monitor settings in there and in the 'device' section details of your card.
good luck, jens

suse7.3 not hanging!

hi and thank you 'j-ray' for your advice. i checked the hardware with SAX2, nothing changed.
so, i ended up reinstalling my SuSE 7.3 and reconfiguring it. unbelievable!
everything seems to be OK so far. i've no idea why. the connection is great and e-mail goes in and out ok and i'm posting this not from Windows2000 which i'm used to but from Linux!
