you can use wiki to find answers:
what is shell: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shell_%28computing%29
different kind of unix shells: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_shell
also there is a page with definition: http://www.linfo.org/shell.html
but actually I do not know why is it called shell.

Please don't post your homework questions, and ask others to answer them for you. We will be glad to help clear up confusion you have, but you are going to have to show effort of your own.

Aw c'mon help the poor kid out.

The "shell" is a little one layered enclosure deep inside the system which contains "the kernel".

When the system starts up, the shell breaks open and the kernel is born.

As your system runs, it spawns child processes which become new eggs to be used for future system bootings.

A core dump is when the shell is broken at an immature time and a not yet ready kernel is wasted.

Verbiage and spelling is important, make sure you copy that verbatim.

Very enlightening, rtmistler. :)

@rtmistler But you left out what you call the infant kernel spawned from the broken shell. Isn't that a "kernelette" (Ital: cherneletto Germ: kernelchen)?
